Poppy Signs - Sign Scheme for New Unit

We’d like to thank all our Customers and Partners for your continued business, as a result we’ve completed our move to larger premises to keep up with demand.  The second move to larger premises in the last 5-years.  Our new facility offers some fantastic benefits for our customers and staff alike.

Better location:   It’s easier for our customers to access us - especially for those with larger commercial vehicles, trucks and buses.  It’s easier and faster for us to reach you to complete sign installations.

Better access:  We have adjacent parking for up to 30 cars, vans, trucks and buses – ideal for larger scale fleet projects and more convenient for all visitors.  Both shutter doors are 4m wide by 5m’s tall – we can accommodate almost any size of vehicle and work on up to 10 vans at the same time.

Bigger showroom:  In response to Customer demand we are able to demonstrate a much wider range of our products and options – it makes the selection process easier, faster and more convenient.

Dedicated CNC/machine shop:  We’ve brought all our machinery under one roof to speed up delivery and installation time.  The end to end manufacturing process follows a production line layout saving even more time and reducing prices.

Bigger offices:  Since moving in we’ve built over 1000 square foot of additional office workspace to accommodate the extra staff we will need to meet increasing demand and maintain the highest levels of customer service.

Once again thank you for your support.

We look forward to the year ahead and to again serving our valued Customers.

Poppy Signs New Banner Welder

New manufacturing equipment arrives - Banner welder

Novermebr 2013

Weldmaster-T3-ExtremeWe’ve recently invested in a ‘Weldmaster T3 Extreme’ hot wedge banner welder.  We believe we are the only company in the area with this state of the art equipment for the finishing of banners and other fabric products.

Unlike traditional sewing or bonding with sticky tape this machine creates a stronger welded hem - more robust and neater than than any other finish (and much quicker).

The addition of the welder greatly increases our production capacity to 100’s of banners each day and the ability to ship more out on a same day turnaround.

The system works on regular banner material, mesh, tarpaulins, PE, awnings and more - giving flat hems or pole pockets.

For our customers it means faster lead times, unbeatable quality, more durable longer lasting banners, and more competitive pricing.

Full article:

MANUFACTURER David McDonald plans to grow his business this year - with money he borrowed and on terms he can afford.  His firm Poppy Signs produces commercial signage and services, including graphics for vehicles and shops. The loan he has just secured will be spent on building a national network of local websites to sell a new range of kits for traders.

Previously McDonald, 43, had used banks for investment, but this time he chose an alternative route, raising the finance through a peer-to-peer lender, one of the diverse funding forms to emerge since the credit squeeze. Commercial peer-to-peer lending matches investors, seeking better returns, directly with borrowers, seeking lower interest rates, with no bank in between. The match-making takes place via websites acting as online marketplaces.

With smaller businesses still struggling to obtain backing from traditional sources, it’s a sector that’s set to gain momentum, spurred on by technological advances according to the Bank of England’s director of financial stability Andrew Haldane.   McDonald went through FundingCircle.com, the UK’s largest peer-to-peer lender exclusively for businesses. More than 30,000 investors have put in 67 million so far, a figure expected to reach 100m by the end of 2013.

Small businesses can borrow from 5,000 to 500,000, with the average about 60,000. The rate averages out at 9.1 per cent. Loans are for one, three or five years and the one-off fees vary between two and five per cent. Investors can pledge as little as 20. Applications are assessed first by underwriters and firms must be creditworthy with at least two years of trading history posted at Companies House.  Once applications are approved, they are forwarded to investors to take part in a bidding auction. Funding Circle handles collection of the monthly repayments.

With a clear business plan, McDonald prepared thoroughly for his auction, ensuring he had plenty of concise but detailed information to hand should investors ask. The effort was repaid with Poppy Signs reaching its funding target in under an hour.  “So I kept the process going for the whole fortnight that is allowed, because the more that come on board, the more competitive the rate charged,” says McDonald. He ended up with 394 investors and paying 7.9 per cent over three years.  The rate he achieved was less than offered by banks, which he had tried initially. The sticking point was their terms: they wanted him to put his house up as security. “I just wasn’t prepared to risk the family home, so I decided to give Funding Circle a go. I was delighted with how quickly I got the loan,” he says.

Poppy Signs employs eight in Preston, Lancashire, and hopes to push up its turnover to over 500,000 this year.

McDonald’s investment will be spent on creating an e-commerce model with 200 location-specific branded websites offering tailored advertising products. Customers upload their details, Poppy will make the items and then clients can assemble them on site themselves.  Firms doing local searches are far more likely to come across the company with this model and respond to its targeted approach, explains McDonald.

“We are in a very competitive sector, there is a lot of technology involved to build this model, but it’s a way as a small company to scale the business quickly, reach new geographically-spread markets and create employment,” he adds.

Peer-to-peer lending is moving into the mainstream, says Funding Circle’s chief executive office Samir Desai, pointing to the Government’s recent 110m investment commitment through its Business Finance Partnership and its recent confidence-building decision to begin formal regulation of the market.    “This year we will see a greater diversity of investors, which may include more local authorities, hedge funds and private companies,” predicts Desai.” Longer term it could be pension funds.”

We were delighted to feature in the Daily Express Business Supplement this month.   The article on growth and investment focused on Peer to Peer lending and successful companies using this innovative facility to continue their growth in the face of the challenging economy.

Our continuing development program will offer our customers a better service, more competitive pricing and a wider range of products.  We look forward to assisting you during 2013.

New manufacturing equipment

We have invested in a revolutionary ‘flatbed applicator’.  This huge table, weighing nearly 1-ton and nearly 5m’s length, is designed to speed the manufacture of panel signs by allowing the faultless application of printed graphics in a fraction of the time.  We are committed to maintaining the best production equipment to give our customers the best possible signs - we believe we are the only sign company in the region to utilise such a fantastic state of the art machine.

Unlike previous methods of applying printed graphics the Rapid Applicator, allows much improved accuracy.  The machine has an illuminated bed to allow perfect positioning before locking the panel and film into place for rolling.

The even rolling motion of the applicator avoids any marking of the film surface giving the smoothest glass like finish - without any risk of bubbles, wrinkles or creases.   For our customers the finished signs simply look better and will work as a superior advert for their businesses.

The process is up to 600% faster than manually applying film.  This leads to quicker delivery and installation for our customers, further finishing of large panels is now a single person task and this efficiency reduces costs.

The machine is extremely flexible and is regularly used for fascia signs, road signs, estate agent boards, sign trays, A-boards, acrylic plaques, exhibition boards, builder’s boards, safety signs and much more.

BT Infinity Broadband Poppy Signs Case Study

Shane Richie Car WrapLocal Shane Richie fan, Mandy Crowther, approached us to provide a full car wrap design to help raise money for charity in memory of her father, Noel Rourke, who died of bowel cancer in October.

To say Mandy is a massive fan of Shane would be an understatement judging by the finished result.   We created a montage of over 100 images of Shane from his TV shows, theatre performances and with his family.  The design is one of the most unusual and striking wraps on the road!

Shane Richie Car WrapMandy, a tattooist, is planning to open a shop in Chorley in the coming weeks and is hoping people will sponsor her car or give donations in a bid to raise money for charity.

Media interest in the vehicle wrap has been phenomenal with reports in The Sun, The Daily Mail, Rock-FM, Yahoo News, and on countless internet tweets, bloggs and chat forums!  We don’t yet know what Shane himself thinks of it but we hope he will support Mandy’s charity cause.

Supporting Chorley Little Theatre

November 2010

Poppy Signs and Chorley Little Theatre

At Poppy Signs we are keen to support the local Chorley community and local enterprise - collectively we’ve lived and worked in town for over 100 years!

Chorley Little Theatre recently celebrated its centenary year of providing the highest quality entertainment.  As part of their refurbishment program we received a request to provide new signage and we jumped at the chance to donate the signs as the Theatre is such a valuable asset to the town.

After receiving their newly updated logo artwork we created signs for the front and back of the building in long lasting aluminium sign board, complete with durable digital print and raised ‘stand-off’ lettering.

The sign design perfectly complements the architecture and scale of the building giving a bright and cheery look to match the entertainment inside.

We wish the theatre all the best for the next 100 years.

Chorley Football Club Advert

We are excited to announce our appointment as the official Signage Partner and also a sponsor of Chorley Football Club.

The club is a non-league team that is steeped in history.  The ‘Magpies’ were originally formed way back in 1875, and are currently flying high after an excellent string of results this season.

When Chorley FC wanted a more enhanced sign service for their sponsors we were able to offer a Managed Service to reduce costs and overheads.

Benefits for the club include a standardised sign format and pricing structure, zero involvement in the customer’s design and artwork which we undertake, and finally a guaranteed rapid response to ensure all signs are completed for the next match day.

Benefits for the club’s sponsors include a free design consultation and artwork service, fixed low pricing regardless of the design content, and once again a fast turn around to ensure their advert gets maximum exposure.

We look forward to working with the club over the coming seasons. “Come on the Magpies!”

Poppy Signs Accrington Market SignsAfter a competitive tender process we were pleased to have been awarded the contract to manufacture and install the signs for the flagship Accrington Market Refurbishment Project.

The contract was awarded for both the commercial benefits we would bring and the value added design consultation process we could deliver; further our ability to complete the project in a very short time scale.

The overall project is a 2 million refurbishment that will bring back to its former glory one of the finest Victorian market halls in the whole country.

Over a 2-week period we consulted with over 40 companies to provide design guidance and create final production artwork.  We developed a sign style and construction that perfectly complimented the Victorian architecture.  Over 80 large signs were manufactured and then installed over a 2-day period in time for the formal opening ceremony.

March / April 2009

Our high quality vehicle wrapping service was featured in two industry publications this quarter; ‘Sign Directions’, the magazine of the BSGA (British Signs and Graphics Association), and ‘By-Design’, the industry news publication of Metamark, the leading sign materials manufacturer.

This technically demanding project was to re-create Maltesers confectionary in wrap format.   Thorough materials due diligence and careful colour calibration were required to create a wrap colour indistinguishable from the actual product.  (Many packets of Maltesers were eaten during this process!).  The quality of the wrap installation was such that to the untrained eye it was impossible to spot this was originally a white van.

Independent economic analysis of the 62.5 million pound project to bring fibre broadband to virtually all of Lancashire suggests it could deliver a 100m shot in the arm to the local economy.  Experts also predict that the roll-out of a fibre broadband network to 97 per cent of homes and businesses in the county will also boost the local economy by creating around 2,500 jobs and protecting more than 1,200 jobs over the next few years.

One company that has already benefited from switching to fibre broadband is Poppy Signs, which is one of the fastest growing signs and graphics companies in the UK.  It offers a complete sign and display service to the retail, commercial and property sectors. Based in Chorley, Lancashire, the company upgraded to BT infinity for Business in summer 2011 and experiences average speeds of 37Mpbs download and 6-8Mpbs upload.  Revenue at Poppy Signs is growing at 40 per cent year-on-year. In the last six months, the company has recruited an additional member of staff, and in 12 months’ time, it expects to have recruited a further two, taking the total number of employees to nine.

Said David McDonald, founder and managing director: “Our business relies on email and we upgraded to fibre broadband as soon as it was available in our area.

“We regularly send files of 200MB or even larger with artwork for approval by our clients. With fibre this is instant - we’re not sitting there tapping our fingers waiting for files to download.”  Clearly, part of Poppy Signs’ success has been down to the commitment and hard work of David and his staff. But he also believes that fibre broadband has also played its part.

“We invest in the tools that help us do our jobs better and stay ahead of the competition,” said David.

Fibre broadband is definitely helping to fuel our growth. Our productivity has shot up since getting BT Infinity for Business. Although we’re not spending any longer at our desks it’s like we have gained another half a day each week,” he said.

We were visited this month by Geoff Driver, Leader of Lancashire County Council and Bill Murphy, Managing Director BT NGA (Next Generation Access) to publicise the roll out of fast fibre broadband in the county.  As an early adopter of the product we were an ideal case study to illustrate the benefits it brings to the business and more importantly our customers.

With customer artwork files often exceeding 200Mb, and even 1Gb on a few occasions, it is critical that we provide the tools to allow the fast transfer of artwork to ensure customer jobs are processed in the fastest possible time.
